Trader Joe's was out of artichokes, so I ran to the gourmet store nearby and spent a ridiculous amount on a single large artichoke [about the price of 4 med ones from Trader Joe's]. But when you have chokes on the mind it was a worthy expense. Steamed artichoke, bagna cauda, plain melted Earth Balance [not shown] and sauteed onions. Yum.

The two ingredient pineapple cake. I packet angel food cake mix + 1 20oz can of crushed pineapple. Mix [it grows and gets super frothy so use an extra large bowl- this pyrex barely contained it]. Put in an angel food cake pan, or a large 13x9x2 cake pan. Cook 25-30 min. Easy, right? And so yummy. Though I refuse to read the ingredient list on the cake mix- some things I prefer to keep a mystery.

Delicious too. I burned the edges slightly which makes them taste slightly like burnt marshmallows. Yummy.

My biggest knit yet. This thing is huge, and I am not sure if it is the yarn I used, or my gauge was off, but it is really huge and really stretchy. It is more like a big, plush, bean bag than a pouf. That is two body pillows inside, and I had to add a third before closing to get the knit sorta-tight.

An Actual Hanukkah Craft Tutorial- Star Garland!

I have a Hanukkah [Channukah, hannukah, chanukkah- it all goes] party coming up and I have been looking around online for some creative inspiration, but coming up short. I also want my daughter to start getting excited for the holiday and have some reminders up around the house. I didn't want the traditional blue&white, but still wanted to stay more Jewishy than "generic holiday-y". Seriously I found nothing. Martha Stewart did have this clever tutorial to make a "six pointed star" cut out that I thought I could do something with. And I remembered that I have had this bundle of origami paper in my desk for, oh, like 10 years. I wouldn't have picked out that pattern set today, but I think that made it a bit more interesting.

I cut around 70 of them before I had any idea of what to do and a garland seemed to fit the project best. So here is an honest to goodness non- blue&white Hanukkah decoration tutorial.

Hanukkah Non-Blue&White Star Garland

Supplies:

40+ squares of patterned paper

White cotton string

Glue

Scissors

View image larger with instructions here.

Fold a square of paper in half to form a rectangle
Fold the top right corner over to match 1/4 from the bottom left edge
Fold the left side over so the top left border is even with the right edge fold
Using the top point as a guide, fold the whole "triangle" in half
Turn the shape sideways with the folded edge at the top
Cut from the center of the bottom edge, diagonally, up towards where the fold overlaps [see image for this one]
You want to cut a perfect isosceles triangle
Open and enjoy your perfect star!
Using a glue stick, put glue on the back of one star and line the string up with the center fold. Make sure that the points are facing up and down.
Stick the second star on top of the first, sandwiching the string.
Do this 20+ more times to create a garland!

Notes: If I were to do this again I would have created a template of the cut so that each star was the same- each of my stars is a little different so they don't match perfectly when glued together. Good thing I am not a perfectionist. Also, my 2 1/2 year old helped with the gluing- her favorite part. She was also excellent at taking off and putting the lid back on the glue stick. When I put the garland up she exclaimed, "soooooo boootiful!" so I guess it is a festive winner in this household.

We have these beautiful heirloom rose bushes around my building that produces amazing blooms. They not only look incredible- but smell absolutely amazing. I have heard that the smell has been bred out of most commercial roses & rose bushes. These have not- just amazing.

Since bringing the cuttings into my house [still blooming in March!] I have slowly been obsessing over roses. I always though rose images were too twee, traditional, & "shabby chic" until lately. I found this artist via Dear Ada and love the dark depth of the rose paintings.

This is a photo of two roses, pink & yellow, I brought in today- it is dark and raining outside so it isn't a great shot- but if you could smell it!

I bought this little kilim rug remnant at the flea market last week. I love the colours and pattern- even how it looks a bit dirty & worn. With a speed running toddler in the house there is no way I am putting down a rug without one of those grippy rug pads.

But I really wanted to display my new purchase INSTANTLY so I cut a square out of the middle of my larger rug grippy pad [I am sure there is a better word for this]. Saved money & shopping time, and didn't require bringing anything new into my home. Rather genius. And the old rug stays in place perfectly- the part I cut out sits under the coffee table.

My daughter loves bubbles- but I don't trust how "non-toxic" most bubble solutions claim to be. I opened one, and it splattered on my face- and my skin was burning & itching for a few hours. Since bubbles are not food- they do not have to list ingredients and as a parent that makes me extremely nervous. Especially with a toddler who sucks her thumb and still puts everything in her mouth. So- now I make bubble solution- it is so easy that a tutorial seems unnecessary, but onward:

Supplies:

empty bubble container [you can also use a shallow dish, and any object that resembles a wand- such as a wire coat hanger shaped in a circle]

4-6 squirts of environmentally friendly dish soap [i used Seventh Generation- the lavender was on sale]

2-4 squirts of vegetable glycerin [you can find at health food store, or here]

2 cups water

Mix everything together in the bubble container or bowl.

Don't shake- just gently tip back and forth to combine.

Test the solution- the glycerin helps keep the bubble's shape- but too much can make the bubbles heavy. Add more soap if the solution seems to watery or doesn't stick to the wand.

Take bubbles outside and enjoy!

Or if you are like my child- enjoy chasing bubbles for 5 minutes, try to "do it yourself" for another 3, and then spend 30 seconds dumping the solution on the ground.

I made this challah cover for Eloise. She attends a Jewish daycare and they eat challah every Friday- and have loaves weekly for the parents to purchase. I have started picking up a loaf each week and she now asks for "ai-yah" every night.

This Small Stitches Booklette ebook crossed my path a while back and it was an instant purchase. I loved the simplicity of the tutorials- clearly showing new stitches and the patterns- phenomenal! I highly recommend for anyone trying to expand their embroidery skills. I used one of the patterns as a starting point and embellished from there. I cannot recommend this ebook enough!

It is nearly finished [the light purple ink is what is left] but cannot decide on the remaining colours- there is clearly an imbalance and I cannot figure out what to finish it with. The colours to the left are what I am leaning towards- but the cigar box shows my whole selection. So thoughts? Suggestions?

so I switched from bloglines to google reader. I am not sure I like the change- but seems to be the trend and I had a few problems with bloglines not reading feeds. Those problems have disappeared with google reader, but I don't like how the posts are ordered by date updated- not grouped by blog. I guess it will take some getting used to.

So anyway one thing that I cannot resolve is how to export my clipping from bloglines- those posts that I have meticulously saved, filed and organized. As I might put this blog to good use, I am going to go through and post the saved links by category, here so I have the record. I am sure I have posted some of it before, but this way it is organized.

Speaking of organized- I decided today that if I were rich, I would spend the $15,000 to attend The International Butler School in The Netherlands. I know. Don't rich people hire butlers, not become them? But all that tidiness and order sounds heavenly. I don't think I would want to become a butler, but I love the training curriculum.

Daycare Hoodie

Eloise needed an all-purpose hoodie to wear at daycare. The room gets pretty chilly and the kids get extremely messy so I needed something that was light weight, warm, and wouldn't show pasta sauce or paint. I found this hoodie at Target for $8 and then free-handed the embroidery. Since her name has to be on everything, I like to incorporate it into the design, instead of scribbling it on the inside in marker. This hoodie can out perfectly [a little wonky is perfect] and I hope she loves wearing it.

I have a terrible case of the wanties right now. Got the Delias catalogue the other day, and usually I never find anything that I really want, after reading the materials list [no nylon or polyester please], or really thinking about the fit, I have found 3 shirts/ tunics that I want.

this one, this one, and this one. The blue is the most practical and would get the most wear, but I can picture the flower with a tweed skirt & tights. The plaid is probably the least probable since it is not work wear adaptable, but still. Decisions.

For a while E was eating fishsticks for dinner every night and loving them. Then her toddler gene kicked in and she suddenly decided that they were gross. She picked each one up, looked at it, and dropped it on the ground.

These came out too hot from the oven, so I was cooling them in front of the fan; I liked the randomness in composition so much I snapped a picture. They look much better on the plate instead of piled on the floor.

Oh how I love you figs! And how I love you even more as fig & grapefruit jam. I started making this last year when I first caught on the the deliciousness of figs. I came across this recipe, and was out of lemon so I used a grapefruit and have never looked back. Seriously, make this. Your kitchen will smell amazing; grapefruit has a way of making everything smell amazing].

I probably posted this before, but am too lazy to look back, but it is worth reposting.

Fig & Grapefruit Jam originally from Gourmet

2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cup water
2 lb firm-ripe fresh figs, trimmed and quartered
10 + (3- by 1-inch) strips fresh grapefruit zest [I use a whole grapefruit]
Fresh juice from 1/2 a grapefruit [or a whole- if you like things grapefruit-y]

Simmer sugar and water in a large heavy saucepan, stirring, until sugar is dissolved. Gently stir in figs, zest, and grapefruit juice and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until thick and syrupy, 1 3/4 to 2 hours. Last 1 month covered in the fridge.

Behind that is the pepper plant, a cute flowering cactus an a rescue plant from my grandma's. She moved to a nursing home 2 months ago and took over caring for her plants.

I picked up this cute serrano pepper plant at a big box store- on sale. How could I not? So it came home with me and the peppers are just starting to peek out of the blooms. I am pretty impressed with myself that it bloomed anything.

Every once in a while I will google a random recipe and come across exactly what I was looking for. For instance I wanted a rustic dessert that used up the several saggy looking peaches sitting on the counter. And the recipe had to only include items already in my kitchen. Oh, and I wanted it to be healthy-ish. So a quick google search and I hit upon this easy recipe from Eating Well Magazine. It's easy, rustic, semi-healthy, and it also was a wonderful way to use up the giant tub of blueberries in the fridge [my daughter eats blueberries like air]. Plus I loved that you melted the butter in the pan- no extra dish. And cast iron at that.

I used a gluten free all purpose baking flour and added lemon zest. It also took almost two times the baking time. I don't know if that was from my flour, or oven. But oh did it smell awesome and taste perfect. Seriously. Gooey, with crunchy edges with pops of fruit.

*My camera has been dropped so many times that it will no longer focus. But "Poladroid"ed it looks so much better.
